Northwest Corvallis stretches from the older residential blocks near the city centre out along Kings Boulevard and Circle Boulevard toward the edge of town, and the building stock changes as you go. Closer in there are pre-war and immediate postwar houses on the older grid, still running original services and ungrounded circuits in places. The other constant is weather. Service equipment on this side of town faces sustained Willamette Valley rain from autumn through spring, and the corrosion starts where nobody looks, at the weatherhead and the neutral connection inside the meter base. On new work we use stainless hardware, in use covers and elevated mounting. On existing services we open the equipment and check it, because a corroded neutral is the sort of fault that presents as flickering lights and gets blamed on the utility.
