Witham Hill rises on the northwest side of Corvallis where Circle Boulevard runs out toward the Witham Hill Natural Area. Most of the housing here went up between the late 1940s and the 1970s, which puts it squarely in the era of 60 and 100 amp services, ungrounded two prong receptacles and, in the later builds, aluminum branch circuits. None of that is dangerous by default. It becomes a problem the moment somebody adds a heat pump, a home office full of equipment or a Level 2 charger to a service that was sized for a gas furnace and a single television.
The hill itself changes the work. Lots step up from the street, driveways are long, and mature Douglas fir and oak crowd the side yards. Getting a new panel or a trencher to the back of a property is a real access question, not an afterthought, and we plan staging before quoting rather than discovering it on the day. Underground feeders to detached garages have to route around established root zones, which usually means a longer run and heavier conductors to hold voltage drop in check.
Elevation does not spare the equipment from Willamette Valley winters. Exterior disconnects and meter bases on the west and north faces take sustained rain from October through May, and corrosion at the weatherhead and the neutral connection is the most common thing we find on services that have not been touched in thirty years. We use stainless hardware, in use covers and elevated mounting on every service change so the new equipment outlasts the old.
